The most powerful Democrat in Kansas
Quick. Who is the most powerful Democrat in Kansas?
Nope. It’s not Kathleen Sebelius. Her power is already waning as she enters her lame-duck period as governor.
The most powerful Democrat in Kansas is Sixface, the power-hungry, coke-snorting, hooker-chasing, money-raising machine we all know as Attorney General Stephen N. Six. OK, maybe only two of the preceding hyphenated descriptors apply to Sixface…but you get the point.
When he was appointed by Governor Kathleen Sebelius in 2008 to replace Paul Morrison, Sixface was an unknown entity in Kansas politics. The state’s media praised Sebelius for picking someone who was supposedly “above politics,” and since that time, Sixface has carefully managed that image by successfully walking (thus far) a deadly political tightrope stretched tightly over the prosecution of George Tiller – a feat neither Phill Kline nor Paul Morrison were able to manage.
But is Sixface really an apolytical lawyer with little political ambition, as he is portrayed in the Kansas media? Raising nearly a quarter of a million dollars for a political campaign with more than two years to go is our first clue that Sixface is far more politically sophisticated than we’ve been led to believe. Earlier today, Sixface shocked political observers when he announced he had amassed more than $203,000 in political contributions, ostensibly for the 2010 Kansas Attorney General’s race.
But with Benedict Parkinson out of the running, and no other heir apparent, Dirt Diver speculates that Sixface just might be drafted to run as the Democratic nominee for Governor in 2010.

Give us a break. Six is a ONE-TERMER … or, actually, a ONE-HALF-TERMER. Who the hell is he? Has anybody ever actually met the guy? He has zero personality. Nobody knows his story. $250k is nice … but that’s just Sebelius machine bolstering the bank account because they pity the guy.
I’d say that KS is headed back towards a Kline-esqye (Kinzer, Kobach, etc) attorney general. I hate it … but why didn’t Sebelius appoint a well-known prosecutor to the job? This squeeky nerdy judge from Lawrence isn’t going anywhere.
Hey, nobody said we know what we’re talking about here at the Diver…but $250k in the bank makes Sixface a serious player in state politics no matter whether he’s a quiet nerd or a political animal.
From our experience in Kansas politics, voters seem to prefer the laid-back style that Sixface exudes – and with a quarter of a million clams, his campaign team can position him just about any way they need to.
Kobach or anyone else running against him for AG will have their work cut out for them. And with no one else making any serious noise in the Democratic Party circles, he’s in as strong of a position as anyone to be the de facto leader of the party.
