Update:  The Moran campaign responded vigorously to the Diver via email today – apparently the hardworking staffers at Moran for Senate don’t see the humor in the photo to the left.  Here’s the verbatim response from a Moran spokeswoman:

Ironically, Todd Tiahrt is a co-sponsor and supporter of the DREAM Act, which explicitly provided benefits such as amnesty and tuition to illegal aliens. It seems that Tiahrt flip-flops like John Kerry did, depending on what he thinks people might want to hear. Tiahrt is far from having leadership on the issue. Jerry Moran has a consistent voting record on illegal immigration and has sponsored at least four bills, including the SAVE Act to protect America’s borders.

As a U.S. Senator, Jerry Moran will continue to play a key role in fixing our immigration system and halting our nation’s open-border policies.

Fresh off the fisticuffs at Kansas Days, Kansas Senate candidate Todd Tiahrt introduced a bill in Congress that would bar illegal aliens from receiving tuition assistance and college scholarships.

Illegal aliens promptly denounced the move as a racist and bigoted attempt to exploit America’s hatred for law-breaking free loaders.  And they’re right, except for the racist and bigoted part.  The only question that remains is whether or not Jerry Moran jumps on board Todd Tiahrt’s bill, or whether he ignores it.

Tactically speaking, if Moran signs on, he’s basically conceding to Tiahrt’s leadership on the issue.  If he ignores it, he’s essentially saying he supports Kansas taxpayer dollars being used to fund the education of illegal aliens who are breaking the law.  And more posts like this one will rightfully be the result.

The third strategic option for Jerry Moran is to introduce a bill of his own that is slightly different from Tiahrt’s measure, but he probably won’t do that unless Tiahrt starts to gain momentum on this issue.

Bottom line – if you oppose tuition assistance for illegals, this is a good bill.  Here at the Diver, we’re in favor of kicking freeloaders off the wagon.  If you’re a Jerry Moran supporter/staffer/family member/etc. and you know where he stands on this issue, shoot me a note and I’ll post an update.
