Anonymous News Tips
Dirt Diver News is always looking for sources of breaking information. If you have information that is of interest to the general public, we want to hear from you, and we commit to protecting your identity in every way possible.
There is enormous power and freedom in anonymity. Dirt Diver News promises to use that power for the good of the public and to advance the freedom of the press in America.
We offer several options for submitting news tips:
- Option #1 : Use our contact form – remain anonymous while telling Dirt Diver where to find breaking news stories. You do not need to submit your real contact information. Keep in mind, though, that submitting an anonymous email to Dirt Diver is generally only the first step in getting a story published on Dirt Diver. We will always verify the information you send first, so using our contact form is generally best for telling us where to find documentation, evidence, or other sources that can confirm breaking news stories. And remember, if you don’t provide a legitimate email address, we can’t respond to you – so please be sure to either include a valid email or send information that doesn’t require further follow up!
- Option #2: Submit documents or other attachments via a secure, anonymous email - Contact Dirt Diver using our contact form to send us an anonymous email address using a free service called Mailinator – you can make up an email address as you type in our form. See below for further information. We will then respond by sending further instructions to your anonymous Mailinator account.
- Option #3: Provide your contact information – allowing us to contact you directly does not have to result in your identity being disclosed as part of a news story – you can remain an anonymous source. However, if the information you are sharing with Dirt Diver is especially sensitive, this is the least secure method. This method is best used to help Dirt Diver quickly confirm non-sensitive details of a story.
If you have information that you believe may be of interest to Dirt Diver, but aren’t sure of how to share it, follow these steps to protect your anonymity:
Use the Dirt Diver contact form to send a message asking Dirt Diver to contact you at www.mailinator.com.
Mailinator allows you to make up your own temporary, disposable email. You don’t even need to sign up for an account. Just make up an email address, such as yourfakename@mailinator.com, then go to Mailinator and type yourfakename into the sign-in box. It is not necessary to set up an account beforehand. Mailinator will create the account automatically when it receives the email from us.
When Dirt Diver sends an email to the anonymous account, you will see further instructions on the next screen.
Here are the instructions directly from the Mailinator website:
- How do I create an account at Mailinator? It’s simple, you just send email to it. Temporary accounts are created when email arrives for them. First, you give out the mailinator email address you created, and then you check it. It’s that simple.
- Do I have to sign up? No sign-up, you don’t even have to tell Mailinator you’re coming.
- What email address should I use? Anything you want! You can be bipper@mailinator.com, pinkystinky@mailinator.com, or if you’re a 16-25 year old male you can be bigdaddy@mailinator.com. Just make sure your “anything” is followed by @mailinator.com (or one of our alternate domains list on the left of this page).
- What can I do with the email address? Give it out. Use it in webforms. Post it on forums. Use it any time you need an email address, but don’t want to be slowed down by the sign-up process or spammed for eternity.
- Then what? How do I check the email? You have several options:check the mailbox here on this site
via RSS
via a widget!
via your web browser
If you still don’t understand how simple and secure this service can be, try it now. Open your normal email account and make up any email address you want – fakename@mailinator.com, for example. Then visit Mailinator.com, enter the email prefix into the sign-in box and you will see your message. It’s that simple.
It is our goal to be the leading source of news and information in Kansas. Unlike the major newspapers, we don’t send reporters to do stories on every car crash, burglary or similar story. We break big stories, and we link to the rest.
Our pledge to our sources is that we will protect your identity – and we will do it by helping you protect yourself first.
